Betta Fish Tank Setup: A Step-by-Step Guide
Setup checklist
1. Choose and place the tank
Pick a 5-gallon tank with a lid — bettas jump, so the lid is essential. Place it on a flat, sturdy surface away from direct sunlight and drafty windows (which cause temperature swings and algae).

2. Add substrate
Rinse gravel or sand thoroughly before adding. You need enough for about 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) on the bottom. Gravel is easiest for beginners — just keep it smooth, not sharp, so it can't tear fins.
3. Install filter and heater
- Filter: a gentle sponge filter or a low-flow hang-on-back filter. Bettas are poor swimmers — strong flow stresses them.
- Heater: an adjustable heater rated for your tank size, set to 78–80°F (25–27°C).
- Thermometer: always check actual temperature — don't trust the dial alone.

4. Decorate with plants and hides
Bettas need places to hide and rest to feel safe:
- Live plants like java fern, anubias, or java moss give cover and improve water quality.
- A smooth cave or broad-leafed plant where the fish can sleep.
- Avoid sharp, rough, or tiny decorations that can snag delicate fins or trap the fish.

5. Fill and dechlorinate
Fill the tank with tap water and add a dechlorinator (water conditioner) to remove chlorine and chloramine. Never add fish to untreated tap water. Start the filter and heater now so the water is circulating and warming.
6. Cycle the tank (don't skip)
This is the step most beginners rush — and the reason fish die in the first week. You need to grow the colony of beneficial bacteria that breaks down fish waste before adding the fish. See our full guide for the beginner-safe method: this takes 3–6 weeks.

7. Add your betta
Once ammonia and nitrite read 0, you can add your betta:
- Acclimate slowly. Float the bag in the tank for 15–20 minutes, then add a little tank water to the bag over another 15 minutes.
- Gently release the fish into the tank (don't pour bag water in).
- Keep lights dim for the first day while it settles in.
